The Seattle Modern Quilt Guild is a group of modern quilters who love to sew together. Our mission is to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through fellowship, art, education, and community outreach.

Modern quilting enthusiasts of all skill levels are welcome to join, regardless of where you live. We have been part of the international organization, The Modern Quilt Guild, since 2010 and were formalized as a non-profit organization in 2013.

Our in-person meetings are in Seattle, but our members come from a large geographical area, ranging from Everett to Tukwila and from West Seattle to Carnation. Since the pandemic, we've been joined by online members from throughout the US who value our compelling speakers, inspiring workshops, and vibrant community of quilters.

As a member of the Seattle MQG, you’ll be invited to a variety of events, including monthly meetings, sew-ins, workshops, retreats, charity quilting, swaps, and challenges.

National Membership - Your membership in the Seattle MQG includes membership in the international organization, the Modern Quilt Guild (MQG). The MQG site has many resources including patterns, webinars, and tutorials. Learn more..

Charity Quilting – Our Giving Quilts chair manages the volunteer opportunities to produce quilts for donation to different causes, including suggesting patterns for donation quilts, arranging sew-ins for communal sewing efforts, and encouraging guild members to participate in making donation quilts. SeaMQG donated 90 quilts to our community in 2025 alone.

The guild participates in MQG's QuiltCon Community Outreach Challenge, where teams of individual members or local MQG guilds make a quilt together based on a set challenge theme and rules. The quilt is then donated to an agreed-upon site.

Scholarships - The MQG and SeaMQG share a common goal: to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community. We offer scholarships to our members who need financial assistance accessing workshops that can help them grow and advance as quilters and artists.

Workshops We offer multiple workshops throughout the year, bringing nationally-known instructors, as well as local talent, to teach classes in a variety of quilting techniques.

Swaps and Challenges – We offer one or more swap or challenge opportunities each year, switching up the format so that there’s something for everybody!

Block of the Month (BOM)Our guild takes the traditional idea of a Block of the Month challenge and creates a new design each year. Past BOMs have included “slab” improvisational quilting, appliqué piecing of an abstract design, Quilt As You Go based on an aeronautical theme, and a medallion-style mystery quilt.

Exhibits and Quilt Shows – Although we don’t hold our own quilt show, our members have many opportunities to enter their quilts at regional shows in the area. We also display members’ quilts at Seattle’s Folklife Festival each year.

Lending Library -- Borrow from our extensive library of quilting books at our next in-person meeting or try out the Accuquilt GO! fabric cutting system.

Meetings About two thirds of our meetings are hybrid (simultaneous Zoom and in-person) meetings, and the rest are over Zoom only (the winter months). We provide a variety of content throughout the year, including Speakers, Blocks of the Month, Demos (of different techniques), Trunk Shows, and more. Each meeting includes Sew and Tell for members to share finished quilts.

Virtual Sew-Ins – Guild sew-ins are a chance to gather with other members and sew together. Most sew-ins are held over Zoom, but a few in-person sew-ins are scheduled each year.

Holiday Sew-in Party – Instead of a December meeting, we gather on the first Saturday in December for a day of sewing fun.

Retreats – We have two kinds of retreats. Weekend retreats provide a full getaway, and day retreats offer lower cost options and greater flexibility.

Members Only Discord Channel - Roughly 70% of our current members have joined our Discord channel. It's active, but not overwhelming. Users can take advantage of our group's breadth of knowledge by asking questions, sharing tips and tricks, and giving general peer-to-peer support and encouragement. It's also a great place to coordinate meet-ups, share deals, sell or give away unneeded items, borrow notions, and share WIPs and finishes.
