"Sunrise Over the Benicia Bridge", 2024
Inspired by "Let the River Run" by Carly Simon
21" x 21"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric

This song vividly takes me back to a coming-of-age moment in 1990, when I drove 18+ hours to begin my sophomore year of college. I was making the drive alone for the first time, having just bought my first car from my dad. Leaving the SF Bay Area, I drove into a beautiful sunrise over the Benicia Bridge as the first notes of this song played on a mixed tape from my longest and dearest friend. This song forever takes me back to that moment, that sunrise, and the thrilling independence of new adulthood.

Amber Dawn Arnold
"Diggy Diggy", 2024
Inspired by "Diggy Diggy Hole" by Wind Rose
17" x 17"

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

Living in a house with three teenage boys means my creative inspiration often comes from unexpected places. This quilt was sparked by my thirteen-year-old son’s enthusiastic introduction to Dwarf Metal—a genre I had not encountered until he played Diggy Diggy Hole by Wind Rose, his favorite song. Together, we selected fabrics that evoke the rugged texture of a cave wall, layered with hints of shimmer to suggest hidden gems waiting to be discovered. This quilt is not only a tribute to a musical moment we shared, but also a celebration of the joy of exploring new things alongside my son.

Amber Dawn Arnold
"Petrichor", 2024
Inspired by "Petricor" by Ludovico Einaudi
17" x 16"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

Petrichor is the beautiful earthy scent in the air when it rains after a dry spell. Living in the Pacific Northwest, it is a smell that I've encountered and enjoyed throughout my life. Upon hearing the piece, Petricor by Ludovico Einaudi, I could almost see the movement of the air and water as it rains and the subtle movement of mist that rises afterwards that creates the beautiful petrichor. I chose the crosswoven background to help convey some of that subtle movement in contrast with the bolder movements of the improv piecing.

Anne Crow
"She Speaks To Me", 2024
Inspired by "Let It Be" by The Beatles
20" x 25"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Embellishment - 3D, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric

Nature and walking labyrinths help me "let it be". I relax and breathe deeper. Focusing on natural beauty and my inner message brings me back to center.

April Benson
"Kite Song", 2024
Inspired by "Kite Song" by Patty Griffin
19" x 16"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Hand Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Recycled fabric materials

As a new quilter on a short timeline (I learned about the challenge only a few weeks before the due date), I made this as a personal experiment in improv design. I was hoping to reflect the way that Patty Griffin's Kite Song" starts with such clear imagery of a little girl flying a kite on a Sunday afternoon but later makes you wonder if the kite was just a dream

Beth Ratzlaff
"I was Framed!", 2024
Inspired by "All the Rowboats" by Regina Spektor
27" x 21"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

This quilt started with improv practice. I was playing with scraps from another quilt, shaping them into petals. The song came through my headphones on shuffle, and I thought: those petals could be rowboats.

The irony of creating a display quilt based on a song about art imprisoned in galleries was not lost on me. When I created my own rowboats, it was important that I give them a chance at a happy ending. One boat has just managed to escape, and the rest are following behind - each waiting for their chance to bust out of the quilted frame.

Bridget Slocum
"We Do", 2024
Inspired by "I Will" by The Beatles
24" x 20"

Machine Piecing, Machine Applique, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Metallic Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

I told my son that I'd like to make him a quilt for the challenge and asked him what his favorite Beatles song was. He said it was 'I Will' and the song inspired me to make a quilt about his and my daughter-in-law's wedding. The theme of the quilt is family dancing together at the wedding, the beautiful flowers, and the sparklers to send them off on their honeymoon. It was the most beautiful and thoughtfully put together wedding I have attended!

Chandra Wu
"Riding on the Metro", 2024
Inspired by "The Metro" by Berlin
18" x 32"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Polyester thread

I've photographed the grab bars on the light rail many times and this challenge was exactly the opportunity to make one of my sketches into a quilt. The song is about riding around alone while processing some relationship anger. I agree that riding public transit can be therapuetic: alone while not alone.

Christa Poel
"Golden Blunders", 2024
Inspired by "Golden Blunders" by The Posies
22" x 22"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Foundation Paper Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread

The inspiration song is about mistakes that we make in our lives. I interpreted that literally in my quilt, and intentionally (and in a few cases unintentionally) included mistakes in the gold fabrics or thread in my quilt.

Cordelia Nance
"Hooray for Hazel", 2024
Inspired by "Hooray for Hazel" by Tommy Roe
21" x 24"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric

In memory of my jolly little chihuahua--Hazel. She passed in March at the age of 15 and is greatly missed.

Debbie Jeske
"Surrounds", 2024
Inspired by "Seattle" by Perry Como
18" x 27"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

The inspiration for Surrounds was "Seattle" sung by Perry Como in the 1960s. Or as I think of it, "The bluest skies you've ever seen are in Seattle." I remember it often being on the radio here in the Seattle area when I was a kid.

"Seattle" was composed by Hugo Montenegro with lyrics by Jack Keller and Ernie Sheldon. It was the theme song for "Here Come the Brides" TV show, and also sung by Bobby Sherman, my teenage heartthrob. Fond memories abound around this song, and I think of it whenever skies are blue here in the PNW.

Dionne Hersh
"Captive On A Carousel of Time", 2024
Inspired by "The Circle Game" by Joni Mitchell
15" x 15"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Applique, Hand Applique, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

Joni Mitchell's well-known sing-along song "The Circle Game" is about the passage of time, youth, nostalgia, regret, and hope. It is also about the cyclic nature of growth and maturation. It was written in response to Neil Young's song "Sugar Mountain," which is about the bittersweet passage of youth.

The circle is my favorite shape, and Joni is my favorite songwriter/singer. The nature of this challenge made my song choice obvious and nearly instantaneous.

Dorothy Neville
"Glitter on the Highway", 2024
Inspired by "Love Shack" by The B-52's
13" x 23"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Applique, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Wool or Wool Blend Batting

My educational background in mathematics and I have been a volunteer exhibition guide for a contemporary and modern art museum. When I began quilting, I drew on both math and art for inspiration. My song choice, Love Shack, comes from my running friends. One friend used to live in the former Love Israel compound on Queen Anne. We would often meet for a run at her affectionately named Love Shack. I think of myself and my friends running and dancing wildly with "Hop in my Chrysler, it's as big as a whale, and it's about to set sail."

Harriet Wasserman
"1951", 2024
Inspired by "Blue Velvet" by Tony Bennett
17" x 17"

Machine Piecing, Hand Applique, Machine Quilting, Velvet, Silk or Silk Blend Batting

"Blue Velvet" was played everywhere when I was in high school. The dance band played it at every event. When this challenge was announced the combination of a color and a fabric was irresistible. I used some samples and some ribbons to get the small bits needed. I make mostly modern, small quilts using a variety of techniques. Improv is not my main style, but it seemed to fit this challenge.

Harriet Wasserman
"Rainbow is Gone", 2024
Inspired by "Love is Blue" by Marty Robbins
18" x 18"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Hand Applique, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Polyester batting

In 1968, "Love is Blue" played constantly on the radio, so it fit well with our theme, "I heard it on the radio". The instrumental and French versions are my favorites but I chose English lyrics for this exhibit. The broken-hearted singer describes their emotions in terms of various colors, making it appropriate for a fabric piece. I have been quilting since the 1960's and enjoy making small pieces like this. The colored fabrics are Kona "sheen".

Harriet Wasserman
"Raindrop", 2024
Inspired by "Purple Rain" by Prince
18" x 24"

Machine Piecing, Machine Applique, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Thin plolyester batting

The "puddle" fabric was on a giveaway table at a SMQG meeting. It was called "kaleidoscope" but it screamed "rain puddles" to me. I didn't start with the song title but a raindrop seemed essential. When completed, the name and its place in this challenge were obvious. The quilt hangs in my daughter-in-law's office under a copy of the poem "When I am old I will wear purple". I enjoyed improv piecing the raindrop which is machine appliqued into place.

Heidi Pardo
"Major Tom", 2024
Inspired by "Space Oddity" by David Bowie
17" x 16"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric

In the song Space Oddity, the astronaut Major Tom finds himself stranded in space. Utilizing dark monochromatic fabrics with tiny white prints and minimal quilting, I attempted to capture the unending vastness of the universe and the feeling of isolation as he drifts in the void. "I'm floating in a most peculiar way, and the stars look very different today."

Jackie Benedetti
"Into The Woods", 2024
Inspired by "Into The Woods" by Stephen Sondheim, composer
16" x 21"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Foundation Paper Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric

The musical "Into The Woods" is our family's favorite. The themes of finding community, personal growth and the consequences of our wishes and choices is universal. The theme song resonateds throughout the musical, highlighting the fact that we each venture into the woods, and need to be true to ourselves on our life's journeys.

Janet Eary
"Clear Air", 2024
Inspired by "Summer Breeze" by Seals and Croft
18" x 15"

Kite shapes, pastel colors, clouds in this work remind me of wonderful summers growing up in the Midwest. The color area angles suggest the motion of soft summer breezes on green grass and silky sand beaches near cool blue lakes, bringing to mind this old happy song from my past.

Janet Eary
"Kiss is the Drug", 2024
Inspired by "Bad Medicine" by Bon Jovi
22" x 24"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Hand Piecing, Machine Applique, Hand Applique, Machine Quilting, Embellishment - 3D, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric

Projects should be fun! -fun to do and fun to see and experience. When a challenge is issued, or when an inspiration hits, you just have to go for it and see where it ends up. In most of my current work, I start out with a idea and go from there, using maximum color and interesting textiles. Then I incorporate whatever else seems to add an interesting and complimentary element. These works always take on a life of their own! please enjoy and have fun!

Janet Eary
"Young Roses", 2024
Inspired by "Where have all the flowers gone?" by Peter, Paul and Mary
17" x 15"

In this folk song from our youth of protest and longing, shapes in this piece evoke a flower garden where the color shapes arise and fade to their edges. The shapes also involve the borders to give the idea that they keep on going as do our memories.

Jennifer Raymond
"I Ain't the Same", 2024
Inspired by "I Ain't the Same" by Alabama Shakes - Brittany Howard
22" x 20"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Kwandi Hand Piecing & Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread

The "I Heard It on the Radio" Challenge inspired me to think about the music I love in a new way. This song was a powerful anthem for me as I lived through some recent big changes in my life, including retirement. The Kawandi method is about giving new life to scraps. It let me express how my life has changed. I wore the blue oxford shirts in the center to fit into work as a corporate engineer and am now surrounded by the variety and color this new phase of life offers me.

Julia Wachs
"Jungle Vibes", 2024
Inspired by "Gooey" by The Glass Animals
22" x 22"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Applique, Foundation Paper Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

Whenever I listen to The Glass Animal's first studio album, Zaba, I feel entranced by a mysterious, lush, psychedelic jungle of sound. The song "Gooey" most intensely creates this feeling.

Karen Braitmayer
"Modern Pop Sunrise", 2024
Inspired by "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles, 1969
25" x 16"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread

A sunrise is a powerfully positive image and just right for this quilt challenge. "Here comes the Sun" is a favorite song and I think of it each time I see a sunrise over a beach. While searching for quilt ideas, I stumbled on the pattern Big Island Sky by Whole Circle Studio. I did lots of quilty math reducing and revising the Queen size quilt to the 100" perimeter of the challenge. My Jennifer Sampou fabric stash gave the appropriate wash of colors. All in all, it was such fun to do something that brought back happy memories.

"way too fast and way too slow", 2024

20" x 14"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Hand Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread

Loosely mimicking a clock, twelve equal wedges are divided into randomly sized segments, symbolizing the elasticity of time. We measure our lives in years, yet each year can feel endless or vanish in an instant.

Music was my refuge as I processed the loss of my father in late 2023. This song, in particular, brought me comfort. I feel grateful for the challenge that pushed me to transform grief into art and reflect on love and music.

Laura Hubele
"Audrey's Pearls", 2024
Inspired by "Moon River" Audrey Hepburn version, Music by Henry Mancini. Lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Movie - Breakfast at Tiffany's
15" x 27"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Applique, Machine Quilting, Hand Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric

Moon River is one of my favorite songs. It has such a dreamy and nostalgic wandering quality to it. I sat down and listened to it and began to sketch some ideas that spoke to the feeling of the music and then started pulling out fabrics and the piece was born. If you have seen the movie you understand the reference to pearls.

Sometimes quilts are meticulously planned prior to the first cut of the fabric other times they come to life on their own. This piece flowed into existence like the song itself.

Linda Kucera
"A Day For You", 2024
Inspired by "If I Had Words" by Nigel Westlake
20" x 21"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Embellishment - Beading or embroidery, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Beads or Sequins, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

Combine the never-ending and always expanding Fibonacci sequence with some shared values and experiences, that's friendship. I miss you, my Seattle friends!

Lorinda Davis
"Coming From Under My Wing", 2024
Inspired by "The Horses" by Kenny Loggins
21" x 19"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Hand Applique, Hand Quilting, Embellishment - Beading or embroidery, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

This quilt, titled "Coming From Under My Wing," is inspired by the song "The Horses" from Kenny Loggins' album Return to Pooh Corner. As my children have grown and are flying the coop, this quilt captures the essence of this transformative moment. I employed the Modern Quilt Guild design principles of bold use of color, improvisational piecing, and maximalism in its construction. Techniques include improvisational piecing, fused and needle-turn applique, big stitch hand quilting, and matched binding. This piece celebrates the journey of motherhood and the beauty of letting go.

Louise Wackerman
"Hum Along With Me", 2024
Inspired by "Stop" by Jane's Addiction
24" x 24"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

'Hum Along With Me' should probably be 'Hum. alongwithme', because whenever I say the line from the song, I always sing it the way they sing it! The quilt is inspired by Stop from Jane's Addiction, one of my all time favorites from back in the high school days until now. One of the guidelines for the quilt challenge was to not be too literal... I may have been literal... Even if I was, I was excited to play with a shape that I don't quilt often and to play with the layering of each of the octagonal blocks.

Margaret Treleven Murphy
"Tropical Remedy - Lime in the Coconut", 2024
Inspired by "Coconut" by Harry Nilsson
24" x 24"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Hand Quilting, Embellishment - Beading or embroidery, Hand Applique, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric

I wanted to explore bold color and improv curves as part of this Quilt Challenge and knew immediately I hit on the perfect song inspiration with Coconut. I typically follow detailed designs, sketches or patterns but chose to let the process happen more organically for this piece. I played the song on repeat while I machine quilted, which resulted in a continuous stitch with a rhythmic pattern. This piece brings me joy - and makes me laugh!

Marianne Anderegg
"Man, I Feel Like a Woman", 2024
Inspired by "I Feel Like a Woman" by Shania Twain
20" x 18"

Marianne Anderegg
"The Lion Sleeps Tonight", 2024
Inspired by "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by Solomon Linda
18" x 14"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Hand Piecing, Machine Applique, Machine Quilting, Embellishment - 3D, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

I originally planned to create a quilt with many animals lurking around the dark jungle. I came to the realization that the lion was the only needed addition, and that the tail would be enough to show this majestic animal in its natural habitat.

The base of the piece was created by only using fabric scraps. Needing some more texture, I made 3 dimensional leaves by sandwiching batting and fabric into leaf shapes. The tail had to be created with a thin metal strip and DMC floss to make the bushy tip.

Marion Lisko
"Waltz of the Flowers", 2024
Inspired by "Waltz of the Flowers" by Tchaikovsky
21" x 22"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Embellishment - Beading or embroidery, Variety

I was trying to create a "twirl" of sorts, as the "ripple" you hear in the music is very distinct in the portions of the waltz repeat.

Martha Peterson
"The Neon Lights Are Bright", 2024
Inspired by "On Broadway" by George Benson
16" x 22"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Metallic Thread

I literally heard my inspiration song on the radio the morning after the Guild Challenge was issued. George Benson's "On Broadway" has long been a favorite and I have many responses to it. The iconic bass line makes me dance and the lyrics conjure images of Times Square theater marquees. I sketched several ideas before getting to the final concept with curved strip piecing. A workshop with Michelle Wilke helped make the concept a reality. The piece then took on a life of its own and demanded that the outside edges be as organic as the piecing.

Megan Vanderburg
"Extremes", 2024
Inspired by "Jekyll & Hide" by Bishop Briggs
16" x 30"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Hand Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

Hearing the words "Jekyll & Hide" invokes the notion of extreme opposites. Two extreme opposites of modern quilting are minimalism & maximalism, which I challenged myself to combine in a single quilt. One line from the song, "I can't see in the dark", inspired the use of black & white as the main colors and a story of what happens when brightness find its way into a dark room.

MK Reed
"Filibuster Vigilantly", 2024
Inspired by "Birdhouse In Your Soul" by They Might Be Giants
24" x 20"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Quilting, Machine Applique, Machine Piecing, Hand Dyed Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric

This was one of my favorite songs during high school & college, it was even my AIM screen name. All the fabric is hand dyed. I tried to emphasize the "glowing" in the background by folding the fabric as it was dyed. The back features an applique lighthouse guarding rocky shores that's quilted from the middle up on its own piece of batting.

Pat Reilly
"Summer Dancing in the Park", 2024
Inspired by "Adouma" by Santana
22" x 23"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

Kite Hill was filled with gorgeous kites in a deep blue sky. My focus was on the very long tails, bright in neon improv shapes and colors. They swirled in the wind as if dancing. That vision and Santana's music was my inspiration.

Pemberley Vander Linden
"Dance Me To the End of Love", 2024
Inspired by "Dance Me To the End of Love" by The Civil Wars (covering Leonard Cohen)
17" x 17"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Applique, Hand Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Metallic Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

Touched by a beautiful song wishing for an enduring love unfolding over a lifetime moved me to stitch my hopes for my own relationship.

Ombre colors and fading big stitch quilting suggests dancing through time, while the couple is in the present moment with history behind and the future ahead.

It was important to reflect my partner and I, both by using our favorite colors and our silhouettes. Larger bodied love is frequently overlooked in media and representation matters. I used ai to help generate the couple outline as searching for a dancing couple didn't yield body diversity.

Rachel Berryhill
"Sunshine and Spiderwebs", 2024
Inspired by "Sunshine" by Frozen Orange
18" x 18"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Foundation Paper Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread

I took a traditional quilt block, the spider web, and modernized it by using saturated colors and turning the "webs" into spirals. The bright colors are in response to how I feel listening to the inspiration song, Sunshine. The song is by a band in Austin, Texas, where I lived for 9 years.

Rachel Singh
"Fade To Black", 2024
Inspired by "Fade to Black" by Metallica
19" x 19"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Foundation Paper Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

In 2024, I faced immense loss, saying goodbye to four loved ones, including my mother, in just months. This quilt became my grieving process, a way to navigate the void left behind. Inspired by Metallica's Fade to Black, it reflects the weight of sorrow and the search for meaning amid darkness. Each stitch carries pain, memory, and resilience - piecing together what loss fractured. Like the song, this quilt echoes both despair and hope, a tangible tribute to love that endures beyond absence.

"SHOUT!!", 2024
Inspired by "Shout" by Isley Brothers, 1959
20" x 20"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread

As I was making several small blocks of color stripes and rearranging them into a visually pleasing design, these blocks seemed to 'Shout' at each other. The bright yellow in particular wanted to jump right off the quilt.

Sue Murray
"Blue Moon", 2024
Inspired by "Blue Moon Revisited (Song for Elvis)" by Cowboy Junkies
22" x 22"

Displayed at the KEXP gathering space and the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Machine Piecing, Hand Quilting, Machine Quilting, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric

Love isn't as elusive as crooners would have us believe. On average, a blue moon occurs once every 2.7 years. For me, I will likely see 29.5473684 in my lifetime. This artwork explores human relationships to time, nature, and sustainability. It incorporates a retired blue pillowcase and dyed thrifted fabric. Each block is an improvisation of curved piecing within a traditional Snowball block. Blocks are arranged in a grid to resemble a calendar, and hand-stitched dashes mark the passage of time. Hand-quilted circles on each block draw a tactile connection between the moon's phases and willingness to be transformed.

"Nine Hundred Ten Days", 2024
Inspired by "The Healer" by John Lee Hooker & Santana

Machine Piecing, Hand Piecing, Hand Applique, Hand Quilting, Embellishment - 3D, Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabric, Cotton or Cotton Blend Thread, Cotton or Cotton Blend Batting

This piece is a visual representation of the process of my grief, as I understand it, over time. Grief and it's companions filled me completely for days, weeks, months after my husband died. My journey since has revealed that although the pain of his loss remains the same size and intensity, my capacity has grown larger, allowing room for more than just the loss.

My gender journey has been confusing, if euphoric. Flasch's song, Deadname, carries the energy I feel about my own enthusiasm about my nonbinary identity not being matched by those around me. I used white and grey in an original foundation paper pieced design, to imply the golden ratio, representing growth and change, but in a neutral and ordered story. Then, appliqued in the colors of the trans pride flag, I added another story of growth: the golden ratio, but make it exuberant, explosive, and slightly chaotic! Breaking through the edges of the piece, the gender journey continues and grows into the great unknown.
