by Emily Keller from the Block of the Month committee
In honor of my Grandmother, who passed earlier this year, we will be making the Arkansas Traveler Block for our BOM. My grandmother didn’t get to travel much but moved from coast to coast and even lived in Hawaii for a while. When she finally settled, Arkansas was her home. For this month we will be using Elaine’s tutorial for the 12” version. If you want to make other sizes, this block is based on a 4 patch so each of your “spools” needs to be sized accordingly. First printed in the Ladies Arts Company Catalog in 1897, this simple variation on the spool block is simple and yet adaptable. If you feel like taking a trip to the past, Early Women Masters has put together the original catalog featuring many of the blocks in the 1897 catalog. Connie has also put together a great history of the Ladies Arts Company. |
Now that you’ve seen the traditional block, you can start playing with your fabric to create your second, re-interpreted block.

It’s not a seemingly popular quilt block in its traditional form so let’s bring it back!
Have fun playing with color, size or dimensions and see what you can imagine. Check out Seattle MQG's "Year of Doubles BOM" Pinterest board for inspiration, too.
