by Emily Keller from the Block of the Month committee
Shannon chose this month’s block (but the idea was initially suggested by Katie Sprugel): the Dresden Plate. I’ve been eyeing this block for a while now, and while it looks beautiful, it also looks HARD. Not to be deterred I soldered on and actually, it turned out to be easier than it looks. If you can: accurately cut, sew a ΒΌ” seam and don’t mind hand sewing you too can make this block! There are quite a few tutorials out there for this one, but we chose Quilt Social’s tutorial for a 12 blade dresden plate. |
We have one more month to go so I’m starting to think about what I want my overall design to look like. Here you can see all my BOM blocks on my design wall:
Now that you’ve seen the traditional block, you can start playing with your fabric to create your second, re-interpreted block.

The Crafty Quilter has a tutorial and multi-size template for a 12 blade Dresden plate
Quilter by Design has a tutorial for a "fancy" Dresden plate that uses two different fabrics on each blade.
Have fun playing with color, size or dimensions and see what you can imagine. Check out Seattle MQG's "Year of Doubles BOM" Pinterest board for inspiration, too.
