by Emily Keller from the Block of the Month committee
The Ohio Star block is another quilt block rich in history. Barbra Brackman's book Civil War Sampler: 50 Blocks with Stories from History tells a story of Abolitionists and liberal thinkers surrounding this simple yet beautiful block. We are using this tutorial from The Spruce Crafts to create a 12” Ohio star. If those quarter square triangles are causing you problems, you can look at See Kate Sew for an excellent tutorial on how to make them. Shannon used some extra half square triangles she had on hand to make the scrappy Ohio Star mini shown on the left. |
Now that you’ve seen the traditional block, you can start playing with your fabric to create your second, re-interpreted block.

Bobbin Quilts has an alternative to the quarter square triangle that gives a slightly simpler Ohio Block
For a twist on the center block, Seasoned Homemaker has a tutorial to add a bit of extra color.
