What is a sew-in and why would I want to attend?

Sew-ins are a great opportunity to connect with fellow guild members, both new-to-you folks and long-time friends. Our virtual sew-ins are drop-in and informal; join when you can and leave when you need.

Sew-ins are filled with learning opportunities.

    • Watch how other folks do things.
    • Ask for quilting tips and tricks.
    • Solicit advice and feedback.

    What do I do at a sew-in?

Sewing is optional at sew-ins. Or, choose anything to work on – machine work, hand work, ironing, cutting, choosing fabric, organizing, cleaning your work space, or starting to think about your next project. Come, listen, share, and learn.

    Speaker: Sherry Shine

Sherry Shine has always loved to draw. She created her first mural, a huge drawing of her whole family and some friends from the neighborhood, at the age of three. She got in trouble for creating the mural on her bedroom wall then trying to hide it behind some pillows on her bedroom wall. While in high school, an art teacher cultivated her talent and became a strong mentor for Sherry. Sherry went on to attend Morris Brown College in Atlanta GA, on a scholarship to study Business and Hotel Management Many years after graduating from college, Shine again became interested in art and took some general art classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Then one day a friend who was a long arm quilter offered to teach Sherry how to quilt and she was hooked! Sherry learned all about traditional quilting, cutting and piecing of fabrics together.Shine attended a lecture on the dyeing of fabrics and how to make the fabric an art quilt, and that helped her to understand what she needed to do. β€œMy creativity and curiosity were ignited and my passion for art quilts was formed” recalls Shine.

The art of Sherry Shine has been exhibited across the country in galleries, colleges, and museums including Bank Street College, New York, NY, Michigan State University Museum, East Lansing, Michigan, The Bedford Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn, NY, Manhattan Community College, New York, NY and The National Constitutional Center, Philadelphia, PA. Shine currently resides inPennsylvania with her family.

    Theme and Variation workshop

In person with Denyse Schmidt    https://www.seattlemqg.com/resources/Workshops/Theme_Variation_materials2025.pdf

Theme and variation is the heart of improvisation in most art forms. The members of a jazz trio can riff off a tune because they are completely familiar with it. Knowing that tune in its β€œstandard” form both forward and backward, frees them to be in the moment, listening and responding in real time to the other musicians. Likewise, stage actors can only be truly present – responding with authenticity to their fellow players – if they aren’t thinking about what line comes next. A quilt top is a perfect platform for exploring improvisation in the same manner. Once we understand the essential structure of a traditional block pattern – the elemental composition of its parts – we can then experiment with variations that both push the limits of what defines the theme, as well as subtler intonations that together create an exciting whole. Through this process of repetition and exploration, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of structure and composition; and build confidence to create improvisational quilt tops that reflect your unique voice. Bring a favorite traditional or original block pattern to work with.

This is a great class whether you have experience with improv patchwork or not, and I think provides an elemental understanding of the concept, and how it applies to patchwork.

    Speaker: Sherri Lynn Wood

Topic: Improvise! Creating, Quilting and Living Courageously

Sherri Lynn Wood teaches improvisational quilting as a creative life practice, and is considered an expert innovator and leader in the modern improv quilting movement. Her best-selling book, The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters: A Guide to Creating, Quilting & Living Courageously (Abrams, 2015), provides scores, or frameworks, for flexible patterns and creative exploration, along with practical instruction in stitching techniques and intuitive color.

Ever since Sherri Lynn unwittingly defied the sexist dress code at Wiley Junior High School with a modest sundress of her creation, she experienced sewing as a source of creative expression, subversive resistance, and personal empowerment.

Exposure to the liberated abstract quilts of black makers such as Rosie Lee Tompkins and Arbie Williams in the early 1990’s, ignited her passion for improvisational quilting and initiated her trajectory as a community based artist focused on restorative social practice.

Sherri Lynn is the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant, two MacDowel Fellowships, and numerous artist residencies, including Recology San Francisco, where she undertook the task of presenting a body of work made entirely from materials scavenged from the city dump. She holds a Master's in Fine Arts in sculpture from Bard College and a degree in Theological Studies from Emory University.

    ARTIST STATEMENT

One of my earliest memories is feeling compelled to touch and run my hands over bright, shiny colorful plastic buttons on a store rack. The same fluttery thrill bubbles up when I see collections of color in nature, art and everyday objects. It is this feeling that I seek to capture in my textile art and quilts.

Using mostly repurposed fabric from clothing and solid cotton fabric, I create improvisational quilts with pulsing energy, color and movement for the viewer. My passion in the fiber art of quilting is utilizing vivid, electric color and shapes to create an immersive polychromatic experience in addition to using textiles to express my political and personal beliefs.

I am inspired by the historic legacy of women quilters, weavers, and textile artists before me who have poured their creative energies into meaningful, useful and beautiful works of art for their homes and families. I pay homage to the quilters of Gees Bend, the works of Rosie Lee Tompkins, and the simple beauty of Amish quilters. Other inspirations include the intellectual and provocative statements and graphic art of Barbara Kruger, Judi Chicago, Yayoi Kusama, and Jenny Holzer.

    Speaker: Vicki Conley

    Lecture: Inspired by the Parks

My work is born from an ongoing exploration of the natural world, always wondering at its beauty, complexities, and fragility. Through a blend of abstract and representational approaches, I seek to express the intricate relationships between human experience and the environment. The landscapes, ecosystems, and scientific phenomena I encounter during my travels inspire my creative process, while my deep-rooted belief in the importance of protecting public lands guides the narrative threads in my art.

By experimenting with different techniques, I create richly textured and colorful work that aims to draw in the viewer and evoke a sense of curiosity and exploration within each piece. Utilizing fabric and stitch I seek to bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary fiber art, creating a unique and captivating experience for the viewer.

Through color, texture, and form, and the intersection of art, science, and conservation, I strive to contribute to the ongoing conversation about the critical importance of protecting our planet's wild places.

Bring your hand sewing supplies, tools, projects, etc. Tables and chairs will be provided. Bring your rulers and cutting mat if you'll be cutting fabric. We'll have tables set up for that activity.

Bring any fabric or small notions that you'd like share with other members. We'll have tables set up for sharing.

    SeattleMQG offers the

    Whidbey Island Day Retreat

    Aug 14-17, 2026

    10am Fri - 8pm Monday

    at the Clinton Community Hall

6411 Central Ave, Clinton, WA 98236 (on Whidbey Island)

    What’s a day retreat?

A β€œday retreat” means a communal space to sew with fellow quilters where you can set  up your sewing station and leave it up all weekend. The spacious and air-conditioned retreat space has lots of natural light, will feature 6 queen-size design walls, plus space for multiple ironing stations & cutting stations. With 2 quilters at each 8-foot table, you will have room to spread out. The attached kitchen offers extra socializing space.

Seattle attendees can drive up to Mukilteo, take the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry across (20 min travel time, usually a ferry every 30 min), and the hall is less than a minute away once you land in Clinton on Whidbey Island.

    Registration costs

    3-day retreat cost: TBA (2025 $35)

    Single day: TBA (2025 $15)

The space supports 26 quilters per day.

Registration covers your spot at the day retreat. Please arrange your own meals and overnighting. The Clinton Community Hall has a full kitchen and there are many nearby restaurants. Registration opens on June 1st, and payment is due within 30 days (to give you time to figure out accommodation before paying for the day retreat). When you register, you can choose "invoice me" instead of paying right then, and you'll have a grace period to complete payment.

    What is the space like?

Obviously this is not set up yet, so use your imagination! We’ll have tables set up on each side, with an aisle of cutting stations down the middle. The wall of windows gives great natural light. Each 8-foot table will be next to an outlet. The brick wall alcoves will have queen size design walls. Limiting the retreat size to 26 quilters a day gives all ample space. This room also has bathrooms, and adjoins the kitchen.

The attached kitchen has lots of room for reheating, takeout, and socializing.

(We’ll add more tables of course.)

This cute little hall is all on one level, and there are rolling carts to help tote in machines from the parking lot.

    Why on Whidbey Island?

The Clinton Community Hall is such a welcoming space, we thought we’d test out this as a gathering space for the guild. The Seattle MQG is tried out this location for the first time in 2025 to gauge interest from the guild in having an island getaway retreat. With a guild of our size, we figure more options to meet up with your quilter buddies is a good thing. This retreat also features a Community Connection aspect, where we reserved 2 spots to modern quilters on Whidbey Island who may be interested in joining the guild later on, to align with the Clinton Community Hall mission of building community on island.

Note that the guild is still offering another day retreat in October (at Quilting Mayhem in Snohomish, no ferry necessary) so this offering is additive, it does not replace other options.

    How much is the ferry?

The Mukilteo-Clinton ferry costs roundtrip for one driver in one car somewhere between $18.70 - $27.80 depending on length of car and senior discount or not. See ferry fares. You can buy a round-trip fare in Mukilteo, and then just show your ticket on the way back.

    Food Planning

The Clinton Community Hall has a complete kitchen with lots of space to reheat (or cook if you’re feeling motivated) and some tables/chairs for smaller groups to gather in the kitchen to nosh together. You’ll have access to the large fridge and freezer, microwave, stovetop, and fully stocked cups, plates, utensils, etc. You can bring your own ice cream and make sundaes for your buddies. Or reheat your cans of soup on the stove. But if you’re heading out in search of yummies, here are suggestions:

      Quilting Mayhem

       98290

        • Saturday Pass - $25.00
        • Sunday Pass - $25.00
      How do Day Retreats Work?

Bring your machine and projects, set yourself up, and enjoy three days of sewing and camaraderie! Or if your calendar is full of conflicts, choose one or two days and join us when you can. This is a great, low-pressure way to meet up with other people in the Guild.

We've reserved their event space upstairs, so there's plenty of room. Each night you'll go home and sleep in your own bed, but you can leave your stuff at Quilting Mayhem and it'll be ready to go when you return the next day. On Saturday we have added a small room to accommodate a few more folks!

      What to bring:

      • Your own sewing gear and projects
      • Cutting mat (there are a few on hand, but not many)
      • Task lamp, if you like lots of light on your work. The lighting in the room is good, but more never hurts.
      • If you want a design wall, you may wish to bring it. Quilting Mayhem has a few pieces of foam board covered with flannel (about 4 x 8).
      • There is a refrigerator (no freezer) and microwave if you wish to bring your lunch. There are also multiple small restaurants within a 5 minute walk.

If you forget something, their large shop is just downstairs and retreat participants get 15% off!

      What you don’t need:

      Irons, ironing boards

      Extension cords

      Important Notes

If you’ve never sewn at Quilting Mayhem before:

There is a parking lot and lots of street parking around the shop. You can park near the front door to unload, but then please move your car to the street or to the far end of the lot to leave spaces close to the door for shoppers.

Large carts are available to load your gear onto, and an elevator to take it to the second floor.

We should have enough tables to reserve one double table as a workspace to sandwich quilts.
